If you enter Canada as a tourist, you can drive for 6 months with your Chinese driver’s license. If you land in Canada as a new immigrant, your Chinese driver’s license will only be used for 90 days starting from the day you land. (If the province where you first landed in Canada is not the same as the province you plan to live in, your driver’s license will be valid from the date that you enter the province that you are planning to live in for 90 days.) For example, you land in Alberta as a new immigrant and leave within 90 days. Then after half a year, you land in British Columbia and plan to live in British Columbia. The validity period of the driver’s license is calculated from the day you landed in British Columbia and is valid for 90 days.
If you stay in Vancouver for less than 12 months, renting a car or a short-term lease is the cheapest way to use a car. Compare the cost of buying a car and renting one, if you buy a car, you must pay the purchase price + tax + insurance + maintenance + repair (may be involved). If the car is sold within half a year, the depreciation cost of the vehicle will also be included. If you rent one, you only need to pay the rental fee + tax + insurance. The rental company is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and damage of the car. Also, there will be so many cars you can choose, and the time of car use can also be flexible, saving you many times and unnecessary troubles.
If the rental period exceeds 3 months, you can also do a short-term lease, thus the rental price and insurance will have more discounts if you are doing lease.
Renting a vehicle requires the driver’s drivers license (non-BC driver’s license requires additional photo ID, such as passport, etc., non-English driver’s license requires additional driver’s license translation) and credit card (any VISA, Master, American Express credit card is acceptable).
Rental procedures include providing driver’s information, paying the rental fee, checking vehicle mileage, engine fuel level, and car body scratches. Pickup can be done within 15 minutes. If you use your own car rental insurance or third-party car rental insurance, you will have to bring the insurance policy or provide an electronic version of the policy. If you need monthly rental car insurance with ICBC, please make an appointment with customer service.
Usually, rental vehicles can travel to U.S. and cross-province. Some cars or bookings may need to pay additional fees due to the restriction of the driving area of the insurance regulations. For more details, please contact our customer service.
